Best Season for Manaslu Circuit Trek with Pungyen Gompa

Choosing the right trekking season is one of the most important factors for enjoying the Manaslu Circuit Trek with Pungyen Gompa. Nepal Journey Travels highly recommends trekking during spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November), as these seasons provide the most stable weather, excellent visibility, pleasant temperatures, and safer trekking conditions. During these months, trekkers can fully appreciate the magnificent Himalayan scenery while enjoying comfortable walking conditions throughout the journey.

Spring transforms the Manaslu region into a colorful paradise filled with blooming rhododendron forests, fresh greenery, and clear mountain skies. Temperatures are generally mild at lower elevations while remaining cool and comfortable in higher areas. Wildlife becomes more active, rivers flow beautifully with melting snow, and the panoramic mountain views are exceptionally rewarding. Spring is also an excellent season for photographers seeking vibrant landscapes and dramatic Himalayan backdrops.

Autumn is widely regarded as the best overall season for the Manaslu Circuit Trek. Following the summer monsoon, the skies become crystal clear, offering spectacular visibility of Mount Manaslu and neighboring Himalayan peaks. The weather is generally stable, making it ideal for safely crossing Larkya La Pass. Additionally, many important Nepalese festivals occur during autumn, allowing trekkers to experience local traditions and cultural celebrations along the route.

Although trekking is possible during winter, cold temperatures and heavy snowfall can make crossing Larkya La Pass challenging. The summer monsoon season brings frequent rainfall, muddy trails, and occasional landslides, making trekking more difficult and reducing mountain visibility.

Kathmandu is a vibrant city filled with ancient temples, cultural heritage sites, and traditional markets, offering you the perfect introduction to Nepalese culture before beginning your Himalayan adventure.

After breakfast, we begin our scenic drive from Kathmandu toward Machha Khola, the starting point of the Manaslu Circuit Trek. The journey takes us through beautiful countryside landscapes, winding mountain roads, terraced fields, rivers, and traditional villages. As we leave the busy Kathmandu Valley behind, we gradually enter the remote Himalayan region. The drive follows the Trishuli River and later continues along the Budhi Gandaki River valley, offering spectacular views of green hills and rural lifestyles. Upon reaching Machha Khola, you will settle into a local teahouse and prepare for the trekking adventure ahead. The peaceful surroundings provide an exciting first impression of the remote Manaslu region.

Today, we officially begin our trekking journey along the Manaslu Circuit trail. The walk starts through beautiful forested areas and follows the Budhi Gandaki River, crossing suspension bridges and passing through small settlements. The trail includes several uphill and downhill sections, allowing you to gradually adapt to the mountain environment. Along the way, you will experience traditional villages, waterfalls, and impressive views of the surrounding hills. The route passes through Khorlabesi and Tatopani, where natural hot springs are located, before continuing toward Jagat. Jagat is a charming stone-paved village that serves as an important entry point into the restricted Manaslu Conservation Area. Overnight stay will be at a local teahouse.

After breakfast in Jagat, we continue our trek deeper into the Manaslu region. The trail begins with a gradual ascent through beautiful landscapes and passes through several traditional villages, including Salleri and Sirdibas. We cross suspension bridges and walk alongside the Budhi Gandaki River while enjoying views of green valleys and towering cliffs. The route gradually becomes more mountainous as we approach the higher Himalayan region. After passing through Philim, a large Gurung settlement known for its cultural traditions, the trail continues through dense forests filled with pine and rhododendron trees. We eventually reach Deng, a peaceful village surrounded by natural beauty, where we spend the night and experience authentic mountain hospitality.

Today’s trek takes us further into the upper Manaslu region, where the landscapes become increasingly dramatic and the influence of Tibetan culture becomes more visible. Leaving Deng behind, we follow the trail through lush forests and cross several small streams before reaching higher elevations. The path passes through villages such as Rana and Bihi Phedi, offering beautiful views of waterfalls, mountain cliffs, and traditional stone houses. As we approach Namrung, the scenery changes with more alpine vegetation and magnificent views of snow-covered peaks. Namrung is a culturally rich village inhabited mainly by people of Tibetan origin. It is an important stop for acclimatization before heading toward higher areas of the Manaslu Circuit.

After breakfast, we continue our trek toward the beautiful Shyala Village, one of the most scenic settlements on the Manaslu Circuit. The trail climbs gradually through alpine forests and offers breathtaking views of Himalayan peaks, including Manaslu, Himalchuli, Ngadi Chuli, and other surrounding mountains. Along the way, we pass through Lihi and Sho villages, where you can observe traditional Tibetan-style houses, prayer flags, monasteries, and unique mountain lifestyles. As we gain altitude, the landscape becomes more open, revealing spectacular views of glaciers and high mountain valleys. Shyala Village is surrounded by some of the most impressive Himalayan scenery, making it an ideal place to rest and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the region.

Today is one of the highlights of the Manaslu Circuit Trek as we visit the beautiful Pungyen Gompa, also known as Pungyen Monastery, before reaching Samagaun. The trail from Shyala takes us through breathtaking landscapes with panoramic views of Mount Manaslu and surrounding peaks. We make a special visit to this ancient monastery, located in a peaceful valley surrounded by mountains. Pungyen Gompa holds great spiritual significance for local communities and provides a wonderful opportunity to experience Tibetan Buddhist culture, prayer rituals, and Himalayan traditions. After exploring the monastery, we continue toward Samagaun, one of the largest and most important villages in the Manaslu region. The village offers incredible mountain views and a unique Tibetan-influenced culture.

Today is dedicated to acclimatization and exploration in Samagaun to help your body adjust to the increasing altitude. Rather than staying completely inactive, we take a short hike around the village and nearby viewpoints. You can explore the traditional Tibetan-style settlement, visit local monasteries, and enjoy magnificent views of Mount Manaslu, glaciers, and surrounding peaks. Many trekkers choose to hike toward Birendra Lake or explore the upper valleys for better acclimatization. Samagaun is culturally rich, with stone houses, prayer wheels, and ancient Buddhist traditions. This rest day is essential for preparing your body for the challenging sections ahead, especially the approach toward Larkya La Pass.

Leaving the beautiful village of Samagaun, we continue our journey toward Samdo, a remote Tibetan-influenced village located near the Nepal-Tibet border. The trail gradually climbs through open landscapes with fewer trees and increasingly impressive views of the Himalayan mountains. We follow the Budhi Gandaki River and cross several streams while walking through a high-altitude desert-like environment. Along the way, you can observe yak grazing areas and traditional mountain settlements. Samdo is one of the highest villages on the Manaslu Circuit and provides fascinating insights into the lifestyle of Himalayan communities. The peaceful surroundings and spectacular mountain scenery make this a memorable part of the trek.

Today is another important acclimatization day in Samdo, allowing your body to adapt before crossing the challenging Larkya La Pass. You can spend the day exploring the village and nearby areas while enjoying spectacular views of Manaslu, Samdo Peak, and surrounding Himalayan landscapes. For those interested in a more active day, a short hike toward the Tibetan border viewpoint provides excellent scenery and helps with altitude adjustment. Samdo is a traditional village with strong Tibetan cultural influences, and you can observe local lifestyles, stone houses, monasteries, and yak herding practices. This rest day also provides time to prepare equipment and mentally prepare for the high-altitude trekking days ahead.

Today we leave Samdo and trek toward Dharmasala, also known as Larkya Phedi, the final overnight stop before crossing the famous Larkya La Pass. The trail gradually climbs through rugged mountain terrain with incredible views of glaciers and snow-covered peaks. We cross the Budhi Gandaki River and continue through barren yet beautiful landscapes shaped by the high Himalayan environment. The route becomes quieter and more remote as we approach the pass area. Dharmasala is a small resting point surrounded by mountains, providing basic accommodation for trekkers preparing for the challenging crossing the following day. Early rest is important because tomorrow will be one of the most demanding and rewarding days of the trek.

This is the most challenging and rewarding day of the Manaslu Circuit Trek as we cross the spectacular Larkya La Pass at an altitude of approximately 5,106 meters. We begin early in the morning and ascend gradually through rocky terrain and glacial landscapes. From the top of the pass, you will be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of Himlung Himal, Cheo Himal, Kang Guru, Annapurna II, and other magnificent peaks. After enjoying the incredible scenery, we descend carefully toward Bhimtang through a beautiful alpine valley. The long trekking day requires good physical preparation, but the unforgettable views and sense of achievement make it one of the greatest highlights of the entire journey.

After breakfast, we leave Bhimtang and begin our descent toward Tilje, enjoying a gradual change in scenery from alpine landscapes to greener forests and villages. The trail passes through beautiful forests, rivers, and traditional settlements while offering a peaceful walking experience after crossing the high pass. We continue through Dharapani and eventually reach Tilje, where our vehicle will be waiting. From Tilje, we drive toward Besisahar, the main town of the Lamjung district. The drive provides beautiful views of hills, rivers, and rural Nepalese landscapes. Upon reaching Besisahar, we check into a comfortable hotel and celebrate the successful completion of the trekking section of the Manaslu Circuit adventure.

Today we return to Kathmandu after completing the incredible Manaslu Circuit Trek. After breakfast, we begin our scenic drive through winding mountain roads, passing along rivers, green hills, villages, and agricultural landscapes. The journey provides a final opportunity to enjoy the beauty of rural Nepal before returning to the capital city. Upon arrival in Kathmandu, our team from Nepal Journey Travels will transfer you to your hotel. You can spend the remaining time relaxing, exploring local markets, purchasing souvenirs, or enjoying a farewell dinner with your trekking team. This evening marks the end of your Himalayan trekking experience but leaves you with unforgettable memories of the Manaslu region.

This trek combines spectacular Himalayan scenery with authentic Tibetan-influenced culture, remote villages, and one of Nepal's highest mountain passes, Larkya La Pass. The monastery visit offers a peaceful cultural and spiritual experience surrounded by breathtaking mountain views. Nepal Journey Travels carefully designs this itinerary to provide enough time for acclimatization while allowing trekkers to enjoy both the natural beauty and rich heritage of the Manaslu region.

The trek is considered moderately difficult to challenging because it involves long trekking days, high-altitude walking, and crossing Larkya La Pass at 5,106 meters. Previous trekking experience is helpful but not absolutely necessary if you have good physical fitness and prepare well before the trip. Proper acclimatization, steady pacing, and experienced guides significantly improve the overall experience. Nepal Journey Travels provides professional guides who monitor your health, adjust the trekking pace when needed, and ensure your safety throughout the journey in the remote Himalayan region.

Pungyen Gompa is one of the most culturally and spiritually significant monasteries in the Manaslu region. Located beneath the impressive Manaslu Glacier, the monastery offers stunning panoramic views and a peaceful atmosphere that many trekkers consider one of the highlights of the entire journey. Visiting the monastery allows travelers to learn about Tibetan Buddhism, local traditions, and Himalayan culture beyond the standard trekking route. Nepal Journey Travels includes this special excursion to provide a richer cultural experience while showcasing one of the hidden gems of the Manaslu region.

Yes, altitude sickness is a possible concern because the trek reaches elevations above 5,000 meters. However, the risk can be greatly reduced by following a gradual itinerary, staying well hydrated, maintaining a comfortable walking pace, and including proper acclimatization days. Recognizing early symptoms such as headaches, nausea, or dizziness is very important. Nepal Journey Travels follows carefully planned trekking schedules with dedicated acclimatization stops in Samagaun and Samdo, allowing your body to adjust naturally before crossing the high mountain pass.

Nepal Journey Travels is committed to providing safe, well-organized, and memorable trekking experiences throughout Nepal. Yes, beginners with good physical fitness, determination, and adequate preparation can successfully complete the trek. Although previous high-altitude trekking experience is beneficial, it is not mandatory if you are comfortable walking for several hours each day over varied terrain. Regular cardiovascular exercise and endurance training before your trip will significantly improve your experience. Nepal Journey Travels supports first-time Himalayan trekkers with experienced guides, realistic daily walking schedules, proper acclimatization, and continuous assistance to help make the adventure both safe and enjoyable.

Weather & Seasons

The best seasons for this trek are spring from March to May and autumn from September to November. During these months, the weather is generally stable, mountain views are exceptionally clear, and trail conditions are ideal for trekking. Spring offers blooming rhododendron forests, while autumn provides crisp skies and comfortable temperatures. Winter is possible but can bring heavy snowfall near Larkya La Pass, and the summer monsoon often causes slippery trails. Nepal Journey Travels recommends planning your adventure during spring or autumn for the most enjoyable trekking experience.

Permits, Costs & Booking

Yes, several trekking permits are required because the Manaslu region is a restricted trekking area in Nepal. Trekkers need the Restricted Area Permit, the Manaslu Conservation Area Permit, and the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit. These permits help preserve the environment and regulate tourism in this remote region. Nepal Journey Travels arranges all required permits before the trek begins, ensuring that every document is completed correctly so you can focus entirely on enjoying your Himalayan adventure without worrying about administrative procedures.

Accommodation & Meals

Accommodation during the trek is mainly in locally operated teahouses that provide simple but comfortable rooms with twin beds and shared dining areas. While facilities become more basic at higher elevations, the warm hospitality of local families creates a memorable experience. Meals generally include Nepali Dal Bhat, noodles, fried rice, soups, potatoes, pasta, pancakes, eggs, tea, and coffee. Nepal Journey Travels carefully selects reliable teahouses that maintain good standards of cleanliness, hospitality, and nutritious meals throughout the trekking route.

Guides, Support & Safety

Yes. The Manaslu Circuit is a restricted trekking area, and independent trekking is not permitted under current regulations. Trekkers must be accompanied by a licensed guide and travel through a registered trekking company. Hiring a porter is also highly recommended because it reduces physical strain and allows you to enjoy the scenery more comfortably. Nepal Journey Travels provides experienced local guides and reliable porters who ensure your safety, share valuable cultural knowledge, and make your trekking experience more enjoyable and stress-free.

Yes, comprehensive travel insurance is strongly recommended and is considered essential for this high-altitude trek. Your insurance should include coverage for trekking above 5,000 meters, emergency medical treatment, helicopter evacuation, trip cancellation, and personal belongings whenever possible. Weather conditions and mountain environments can change unexpectedly, making adequate insurance an important part of your preparation. Nepal Journey Travels recommends purchasing insurance before arriving in Nepal and encourages all trekkers to carry a copy of their insurance details throughout the journey.

Preparation & Equipment

Packing appropriate trekking gear is essential for a safe and comfortable journey. Important items include sturdy trekking boots, layered clothing, a warm down jacket, waterproof outerwear, gloves, hats, sunglasses, sunscreen, a sleeping bag, trekking poles, reusable water bottles, and personal medications. Temperatures vary greatly between lower villages and high mountain passes, making proper layering very important. Nepal Journey Travels provides a complete packing checklist before departure so every trekker arrives fully prepared for changing Himalayan weather conditions.
